What is Emotional Disturbance?

A condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time:
An inability to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors
  • An inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers
  • An iappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances
  • A general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression  
  • A tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems
 

Characteristics

  • When a person’s physical, social, or cognitive skills are affecte
  • Hyperactivity (short attention span, impulsiveness)
  • Aggression/self-injury (acting out, fighting)
  • Withdrawal(not socially interacting, excessive fear/anxiety
  • Immaturity (inappropriate crying, temper tantrums)
  • Learning difficulties (academically below grade level

·       Training strategies for parents
·       Training in problem-solving for child
·       Community-based services
·       Psychotherapy or counseling
·       Diet
·       Medication
·       Positive behavioral support in the school environment
